Omaha World-Herald: Group fights liquor licenses
LINCOLN -- An Omaha-based citizen group plans to protest Friday the granting of liquor licenses to 23 Walgreens' stores in Omaha.
Diane Riibe, executive director of Project Extra Mile, which opposes teen drinking, said that liquor licenses are already widely available in Omaha and adding more will increase the burden on law enforcement.
The license applications are being considered Friday by the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission, which has the final say on such licenses. The Omaha City Council recommended denial of 13 of the 23 applications by Walgreens.
Walgreens has been seeking to sell liquor in 52 stores across Nebraska. The move comes as a new competitor, CVS pharmacy, is moving into the state. Some CVS outlets nationally sell alcohol.
