In partnership with the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, Project Extra Mile is coordinating two one-day Law Enforcement Trainings, which will be held in both the Omaha area and in Grand Island. The trainings will focus on preventing and reducing alcohol-related harms through sobriety checkpoints, and law enforcement representatives, prosecutors and community coalition members are welcome to attend.  Due to limited space, registrants from the law enforcement community will be given first opportunity to attend should the number of registrations exceed the number of available training spots. The registration deadline is September 30, 2016.

Training topics in the Omaha area and in Grand Island will include:

  • Planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating on sobriety checkpoints
  • Doing more with fewer resources
  • Legal issues and challenges for sobriety checkpoints
  • Collaborative local efforts to execute sobriety checkpoints
Jared Olson, a national trainer with the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, will provide attendees with information about how to plan a checkpoint operation, plan for contingencies and share best practices from around the country.

The trainings will also feature Nebraska speakers with expertise in sobriety checkpoints. Edward Vierk with the Nebraska Attorney General's office will discuss legal issues around sobriety checkpoints in Nebraska, while Captain Bryan Waugh with La Vista Police Department will give concrete examples of collaborative multi-agency efforts to keep communities safe through sobriety checkpoints.
